Enjoying our bacon and eggs
The diner coffee tastes better
As we catch up on our lives.
It’s been a while.
Yes, Margie (that’s what your tag says; I assume it’s your name)
We’ve been here a while;
But no one is waiting for our table.
So give us a break (we’ll give you a good tip)
And please (for the love of all things holy)
Some more coffee.
Notes: My first job was at a diner, so I know all about refilling people’s coffee cups as they sit there and catch up on their lives. So it’s always a mystery to me when servers decide to cut somebody off, especially when it’s slow in the restaurant. I get it, you don’t want people to linger too long, but I was also taught the importance of making customers feel like they wanted to come back, which often included serving them a third or fourth cup of coffee. Perhaps I’ll have to be on the lookout for a new greasy spoon.
